Fetal ejection reflex
/This week I had the honor of witnessing two physiologic births with beautiful fetal ejection reflexes. What is this, you may ask? It’s as it sounds; the swift and smooth ejection of a baby from the womb. Both moms went from not fully dilated to baby out in a matter of minutes. All natural. Zero tears. Just deep earth shaking moans and unstoppable fetal descent. A beautiful orchestration of hormones and physiology. In other words, baby was coming and there was nothing anyone could do to stop it! No, baby won't wait for the assist midwife to arrive, or gloves to be put on. Baby comes on out. It’s a beautiful, sacred thing. A reminder that birth is normal, and our bodies know exactly how to do it.
Of course, for most first time moms it takes a good bit longer (these mamas had birthed before), and that’s just fine. Birth takes as long as it needs to, and for most of us the first time around that’s a good long while. But what a beautiful reminder of what is possible!
One of the babies shortly after being born by fetal ejection reflex. Calm, awake, connected, in love. Welcome little one!
